Professor Colin Bicknell

Professor Colin Bicknell is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and clinical academic with extensive experience in the management of vascular conditions. 

He is professor of vascular surgery at the Imperial Vascular Unit In London. 

Mr Bicknell’s clinical practice covers a wide range of arterial, venous and lymphatic conditions, including aortic disease, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, thoracic outlet syndrome and venous disorders. 

He has particular expertise in 1) the management of aneurysms  2) minimally invasive endovascular techniques, including keyhole procedures and laser vein treatments and 3) the treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome.

He performs a broad range of procedures, including endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, carotid surgery for stroke prevention, varicose vein treatments such as endovenous laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy, thoracic outlet decompression, bypass surgery for blocked arteries in the leg and microsclerotherapy for thread veins.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Bicknell is actively involved in academic research and education. 

He has led research into improving safety in vascular surgery and reducing procedural error.

His work has included studies on the use of robotic endovascular catheters, contributing to the first human trials of vascular robotics.

He leads a number of National and International trials in aortic disease. 

Professor Bicknell holds several professional roles, including Clinical lead for the National Vascular Registry and Chair of the Audit and Quality Improvement Committee for the Vascular Society. 

He is past President of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy and past Chair of the Research Advisory Group for The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of other professional organisations, including the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the European Society of Vascular Surgery.

He qualified in medicine from the University of Southampton and holds an MD and FRCS.

Professor Bicknell sees patients privately at several London locations, including The Harley Street Clinic, The Wellington Hospital and The Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital.
