Mr Ash Sharma

Mr Ashutosh Sharma is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist expertise in retinal and vitreoretinal diseases, as well as complex cataract and ocular trauma management.

He qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital, part of the University of London, and initially trained as both a physician and ophthalmologist. He completed higher specialist training at leading centres including Birmingham, St Thomas’ Hospital, and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Mr Sharma undertook advanced fellowship training with two years in surgical retina and a further year in medical retina, developing high-level expertise in managing complex retinal conditions. He is currently a consultant at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Sandwell General Hospital.

His clinical interests include diseases of the retina and vitreous, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, and macular conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. He also manages complex cataracts, ocular trauma, and complications related to intraocular lens implants, alongside routine cataract and eyelid procedures.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Sharma is actively involved in research and innovation, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is committed to education, regularly delivering lectures nationwide and leading the Birmingham Ocular Trauma Course, contributing to the training of ophthalmologists and healthcare professionals.
