About

Dr. Matteo Bernardotto is a consultant in sport and musculoskeletal medicine who is interested in both chronic musculoskeletal pain and sports-related injuries. He specialises in the treatment of complex bone, muscle, tendon, and joint pain of unknown origin, with a particular focus on back, neck, shoulder, and jaw pain. He is based at the London Clinic and is the only consultant in the UK who is dual-qualified in osteopathy and sport medicine.

Dr Bernardotto treats the underlying causes of pain using holistic principles and integrative medicine. He uses a range of interventions, including:

  • Pain management
  • Functional nutrition
  • Ultrasound-guided procedures (such as joint and spinal injections)
  • Physical therapy
  • Evidence-based complementary medicine (such as acupuncture and osteopathy),
  • Cutting-edge regenerative methods - e.g. extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Dr Bernardotto gained his medical degree in 2007 from the University of Aberdeen and  membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2009. He earned a diploma in sport and exercise medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, before embarking onto general practice and Sport & Exercise Medicine training in London.

He has post-graduate qualifications in musculoskeletal ultrasound and has completed a travelling fellowship in Austria to train in complex and spinal injections under ultrasound guidance.

He is active in clinical research at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust, where he is clinical lead for musculoskeletal medicine. He is the training programme director for Sport & Exercise Medicine in London and sits on the educational committee of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine in Edinburgh.

Outside of medicine, Dr Bernardotto enjoys yoga, bouldering and gymnastics. He also likes to travel to the Italian Alps for skiing.

Explanation

I had an excellent experience. Dr Matteo Bernardotto was excellent. I found him to be highly professional and knowledgeable. He also has a great bedside manner. He was able to explain to me what his impressions were after listening to my history, then he did a thorough clinical examination and followed me up with the results. I felt extremely well looked after and informed along the way. I had been to other healthcare providers previously about the same symptoms and did not manage to find any help in reaching a diagnosis up until seeing Dr Bernardotto, so I am very grateful to Dr Bernardotto for his excellent knowledge and clinical skills. I am a GP and have found his work to be really superb. Very well done!

Explanation

Matteo was one of the first doctors I've spoken with who made me feel I don't have to give up going back to running, which is a passion of mine. While I was referred to him for a separate issue, I'd also provided him with information on what was diagonsed as a stage 4 patella degradation issue. The surgeon who'd diagnosed this had told me I should not run as it would hasten the deterioration, and that, in any case, I would need a knee replacement within five years. Moreover, the NHS doctor who recommended that I see Matteo about a different issue had echoed that surgeon's diagnosis that I would be looking at knee replacement surgery within five years. Matteo explained things clearly and directly. His explanation of using localized physio to help strengthen muscles that would help stabilize the knee, and his mentioning that he has the same diagnosis on his knee that I do, which hasn't hindered his activity, was a most uplifiting conversation. Perhaps it was because I so wanted to hear that I could go back to running that made me feel comfortable, but as someone who's career it is to work with people to help them get past blocks and to realize thier potential, I felt his manner of approaching medicine was spot on. As in, don't fill people's minds with the worst case scenarios as their mind will latch on to that. While I may, in fact, need a knee replacement within five yars, who knows, the confidence I now feel with relying on learning physio techniques to build muscles in my leg and in the knee area, give me hope to start running agian. What Matteo gave was a lifetime prescription for physio that will help me continue doing what I love, rather than a kind of dead-end approach of suggesting the replacement is a foregone conclusion. The difference that makes in mindset is incredible. Well done!
