Dr Lushen Pillay

Dr Lushen Pillay is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with specialist expertise in digestive health, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and endoscopy. He is currently based at Colchester Hospital, where he leads the IBD service, and also sees private patients for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions.

Dr Pillay completed higher specialist training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine, including advanced subspecialty training in inflammatory bowel disease at Cambridge University Hospitals. He has extensive experience in diagnosing and managing both common and complex digestive disorders, combining evidence-based medicine with a personalised and compassionate approach to care.

He is highly experienced in gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and is accredited in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has performed thousands of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, with a particular interest in polyp removal, dysplasia surveillance, and the investigation of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, and altered bowel habit.

Dr Pillay has a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis. He is experienced in the use of biologic therapies and advanced treatments for patients with complex disease.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Pillay is actively involved in research and clinical trials, helping bring new treatments to patients. He has published in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented research at national and international conferences.
