Dr Lavanya Athithan

Dr Lavanya Athithan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital within University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Leicester. She provides specialist care across all aspects of cardiology, with subspecialist expertise in multimodality cardiac imaging and heart failure.

Her clinical interests include transthoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT imaging. She has particular expertise in advanced cardiac imaging for the assessment of structural heart disease, cardiomyopathies and heart failure.

Dr Athithan graduated in Medicine from Cardiff University, where she received several undergraduate awards. She subsequently completed Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and undertook specialist cardiology training within the East Midlands.

She was awarded a competitive British Heart Foundation Clinical Training Fellowship to complete a PhD focused on cardiac structural and functional changes in Type II diabetes, with particular emphasis on cardiac MRI and heart failure. She also received recognition from the National Institute for Health and Care Research and the Royal College of Physicians for leadership and contributions to clinical research portfolio studies.

Dr Athithan is currently the Clinical Lead for Cardiac Amyloidosis in Leicestershire and established a dedicated cardio-oncology service across University Hospitals of Leicester. She remains actively involved in research, education and specialist training, with numerous national and international presentations and publications. She is accredited in echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT by the relevant UK and international professional societies.
