About Mr Jawad Freites

Mr Freites is a Consultant Gynaecologist with advanced accredited training and extensive experience in urogynaecology and pelvic floor surgery. He is currently employed at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he serves as Urogynaecology Lead.

He began his specialist training in York in 2007, was admitted to Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2012, and completed higher specialist training in 2014. Since then, he has worked as a Consultant across York, Malton, and Scarborough hospitals. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, a senior professional distinction recognising his expertise and contribution to the specialty.

During his training, Mr Freites developed a strong interest in benign gynaecological pathology and its impact on women’s quality of life, particularly in relation to pelvic floor health. As he refined his surgical skills in both minimally invasive and open techniques, he developed a particular focus on pelvic floor dysfunction. To further his expertise, he completed an advanced training module in urogynaecology and vaginal surgery through the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, specialising in the treatment of complex pelvic floor prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Over the past decade, he has continued to expand his pelvic floor practice through dedicated clinical work, research activity, and service development. As Urogynaecology Lead for the Trust, he co chairs the Pelvic Floor Multidisciplinary Team and develops personalised care pathways tailored to each patient’s needs.

Through his specialist clinical work and service development, Mr Freites regularly receives referrals from consultant colleagues across York and Scarborough, including colleagues from other specialties, for the treatment of complex pelvic floor pathology. This includes minimal access and joint specialty laparoscopic surgery for multi compartment pelvic organ prolapse, and specialist non mesh continence procedures such as fascial sling surgery and colposuspension for complex or recurrent urinary incontinence that would previously have required referral outside the Trust.

He is known for his warm, approachable, and patient centred style of care. He takes time to listen carefully, understand how symptoms affect day to day life, and explains findings and treatment options clearly and in easy to understand terms. He is a strong advocate for shared decision making, ensuring every patient feels heard, well informed, and comfortable with the plan agreed together.

During my recent visit Mr Freites was as kind and courteous as ever. At my request he explained what he had done during my operation, clearly and with reasons. His examination was as gentle as possible and, again, his explanation of what he found was clearly given. Throughout he was sympathetic and professional.

Particularly liked the way he wasn't worried by presence of daughter and adult grandson. Liked the software he used to explain my internal workings. Interpersonal skills very good . Sense of humour detected.

This was a follow up appointment. Mr Freites is extremely approachable, I do not feel embarrassed or misheard. He explains everything very thoroughly, what his findings are his initial diagnosis what is going to happen and what the prognosis is.

An anterior and posterior operation is, I think, one which every female dreads, I certainly did. However, Mr Freites goes that extra mile to put you at ease. Everything was fully explained at previous appointments so I knew what to expect. Everything went well and Mr Freites saw me before and after the operation and even telephoned the ward the next morning to check on my wellbeing. All in all, Mr Freites surgical skills and patient care are excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend him at any time. Thank you.

I first met with Mr Frietes last year after suffering for 10 years with incontinence. From our 1st appointment he made me feel at ease, he was empathic, supportive and gentle and respectful in his advise and support. Mr Frietes looked after me both physically and emotionally through my consultations, surgery and after care. Mr Frites recommended the best course of treatment, Everything was explained before and after surgery. He is an amazing surgeon with a big heart and a real understanding of incontinence and how it affects life with his only goal being to improve quality of life and happiness. I feel truly blessed to have had Mr Frietes as my consultant and surgeon on my journey and would urge anyone who suffers with incontinence to see Mr Frietes. 1st Class Care and 1st Class human.
