Mr James Kynaston

Mr James Kynaston is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, where he also serves as Clinical Lead in Colorectal Cancer.

He graduated from the University of Aberdeen and completed his higher surgical training in the South-West of England. Following this, he pursued advanced specialist fellowships, including Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (TaTME) training at the Royal United Hospital in Bath and a Minimally and Maximally Invasive Colorectal Cancer (MiMICC) fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital in London, alongside an international clinical observership in Seoul, South Korea.

His specialist interest lies in the surgical management of rectal cancer, with particular expertise in advanced minimally invasive techniques. These include Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), as well as laparoscopic and robotic approaches for primary rectal cancer treatment. His work focuses on improving surgical precision, outcomes, and recovery for patients undergoing complex colorectal procedures.

Mr Kynaston has contributed widely to colorectal surgical research and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. Within his role at NHS Forth Valley, he plays a key leadership role in colorectal oncology services, helping to guide multidisciplinary care for patients with colorectal cancer and supporting ongoing service development in the region.
