Dr Ian Makkison

Dr Makkison has been a consultant anaesthetist for over 25 years at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. In addition to anaesthesia for all the specialities at the hospital he specialises in Chronic Pain and procedures for palliative care at the local Hospice.

He trained at Newcastle University, where he also obtained a B.Med Sci (Hons) degree in Hyperbaric Medicine and Osteonecrosis. Between 1998 and 1990 he worked for the British Anatarctic Survey. This involved being a ships doctor, a medical officer in the Falklands,  and overwintering at a remote research base (Rothera) south of the Antarctic Survey. His duties involved the medical, dental and veterinary care for between 15 and 150 people and 31 huskies. During the year on base he studied the effects of light on Melatonin secretion.

On his return he completed training as a General Practitioner, and then returned to Anaesthesia.
