About Dr. Helen Petersen
Dr Helen Petersen is a Manchester-based Consultant Oral Surgeon, who treats both adults and children, under local and general anaesthetic and intravenous sedation. She consults privately at the BMI Alexandra Hospital and has a wealth of experience in the diagnosis and management of oral conditions including the following:
- Removal of teeth, roots, impacted teeth, and wisdom teeth
- Surgical endodontics (apicectomy)
- Jaw cysts
- Soft tissue lesions
- Exposure of impacted teeth, including canines, for orthodontic treatment
Dr Petersen has also spent extensive time training at a specialist facial pain service at the Eastman Dental Institute and is experienced in the treatment of oral soft tissue conditions such as ulcers and lichen planus. She has a special interest in pre-orthodontic surgery, which includes the removal/exposure of impacted teeth, including canines and supernumeries.
Dr Petersen is the current lead for the paediatric oral surgery service and clinical lead for oral surgery within the Manchester Foundation Trust where she works closely as part of a multidisciplinary team to manage her patients' conditions. Dr Petersen is also a valued member of the Manchester Hypodontia team which takes on patients who have particularly complex dental needs.
Dr Petersen is dedicated to her patients and has achieved two awards in clinical excellence for performing above and beyond the duties of her role. She also has a passion for research and was previously awarded a research training fellowship from the Wellcome Trust in order to complete her PhD. Dr Petersen has had her research published in journals and has presented her work internationally. In addition, she currently holds the position of Editor-in-Chief for the international journal, 'Oral Surgery'.
Dr Petersen also has an interest in medical education and is an accredited senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. She delivers lectures at the University of Manchester where she is the Programme Director for the Masters degree course in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr Petersen is also an invited examiner for the Overseas Registration Examination and a council member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS).

I have seen Helen for facial pain that has been ongoing for a while. She is calm and listens to everything, and conducts all required checks to ensure everything is considered before any diagnosis. She is reassuring and ensures any questions are answered.
Dr Peterson was excellent on all levels and I would highly recommend her - clearly explained everything, very professional and personable and she made us feel at ease throughout - we were impressed with all elements and contact points, together with the team she had around her. Diane who helped organise the appointments was also very helpful and accommodating.
Dr Petersen is always pleasant and extremely thorough, explaining everything in language you can understand. I would have no hesitation in recommending her.

We recently used the service for a procedure that’s currently has a 4 year wait on the NHS. We have never used private healthcare before and was skeptical at first but we found Dr Helen Peterson and found the whole experience reassuring and gave us some answers and help in making the decision to proceed. The whole experience was amazing what all healthcare services should be.

Dr Helen what can I say!? Professionally was amazing in every possible way. She put me at ease with any concerns I had . She was clear and concise with her explanation of the procedure. Dr Helen Personally was kind,considerate and approachable . A very genuine person who anyone would be lucky to meet . I can not recommend Dr Helen more! She made and uncomfortable and intrusive situation seems like a breeze. Thank you!
Helen was extremely reassuring & pro active. I received a comprehensive screening as a follow up from my GP , in response to the request from Helen for blood tests. Her explanations were clear & her examinations thorough. Both appointments were very pleasant experiences.
