Dr Fraser Birrell

Dr Fraser Birrell is a highly accomplished Consultant Rheumatologist who is dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centred care for individuals experiencing musculoskeletal and joint disorders. With a clinical focus on improving long-term outcomes and enhancing patient well-being, Dr Birrell specialises in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the joints, bones, muscles, and immune system. He is particularly recognised for his pioneering work in integrating Lifestyle Medicine into rheumatological care, helping patients manage chronic conditions through evidence-based lifestyle interventions alongside traditional medical treatments.

Throughout his career, Dr Birrell has developed a strong interest in healthy ageing, musculoskeletal ageing, and the treatment of osteoarthritis. He is a leading advocate for innovative healthcare delivery models, having established the first group consultation model in routine clinical practice within the UK. These shared medical appointments, which include both in-person and virtual group consultations, empower patients by providing extended contact time, peer support, and structured education. His clinical expertise also encompasses the early identification and management of inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and the application of non-pharmacological therapies such as knee bracing.

Dr Birrell completed his undergraduate and clinical medical training at the University of Cambridge, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Master of Arts degrees. Committed to academic excellence and clinical research, he subsequently obtained a PhD and a Diploma in Clinical Education. Dr Birrell is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and is an inaugural Fellow of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, where he also serves as the Director of Science and Research.
