About Dr Frank Phillips

Dr Frank Phillips is an experienced and dedicated Consultant Gastroenterologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he investigates and treats patients with the full range of conditions related to the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, including:

  • Gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer screening
  • Inflammatory bowel disease and microscopic colitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and bile acid malabsorption
  • Coeliac disease and food intolerances
  • Anaemia and iron/vitamin deficiencies
  • Weight loss and malabsorption
  • Constipation, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain
  • Acid reflux and indigestion
  • Nausea, vomiting and swallowing problems
  • Gastritis, gastric ulcers and Helicobacter pylori

His subspecialty expertise in both advanced clinical nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) means he is integral to both teams, receiving tertiary centre referrals from hospitals throughout the East Midlands region for complex IBD, complex feeding tube complications and intestinal failure.

Dr Phillips performs around 600 diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies a year, and provides a regional service for advanced techniques relating to feeding tube complications. He prioritises quality, safety and comfort, using water-assisted insertion techniques for colonoscopy and the highly effective underwater technique for removing larger polyps.

Dr Phillips’ comprehensive training and diverse clinical practice enables him to provide his patients with the highest quality care. He holds degrees in Biochemistry (University of Bristol) and Medicine (St George’s, University of London), achieving a Distinction in Medical Sciences. He remains one of the only gastroenterologists to have completed their specialty exit examination in the first year of training, and to have achieved triple fellowship training in advanced clinical nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease, and advanced endoscopy at the renowned centres of Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge and St Mark’s Hospital London.

Dr Phillips continues to be actively involved in research, having delivered important evidence on the risks and safety of endoscopy in the COVID era. He has a number of first author publications in high impact journals and has presented his research findings internationally, earning recognition with a British Society of Gastroenterology Research Prize. He continues to be dedicated to medical training at all levels, including organising and sponsoring medical students affected by war and conflict to study in Nottingham on their medical electives.

I have had a colonoscopy carried out with Dr Phillips which I was dreading due to a previous experience with another Doctor which took well over an hour to conduct. This procedure took 17 minutes and was a lot less painful than previous. The whole team was great and Dr Phillips was very clear and knowledgeable which puts you at ease

Excellent experience. I previously had an unsuccessful colonoscopy, which was terminated due to pain on my part. On this occasion Dr Phillips used a paediatric scope, as we had discussed in consultation, and the procedure was a success. Overall it was a very positive experience, calm, competent and compassionate.

From the very first consultation, Dr Phillips was kind, understanding, and, most importantly, willing to take a direct approach to getting to the bottom of things rather than going down longer routes that might have delayed finding any issues. That decisiveness really gave me confidence in his care. Despite nerves going into the colonoscopy itself, Dr Phillips and his team were absolutely brilliant. They made the whole experience far more manageable than I had expected. They kept me talking and engaged throughout the procedure, which made the whole process feel very quick and despite no prior experience to compare to, the entire thing was incredibly straightforward and painless despite only using the gas and air. I'd highly recommend Dr Phillips to anyone who might be anxious about this kind of procedure and their gastro care in general.

I went to see Dr Phillips for an initial consultation regarding ongoing stomach problems and he was very understanding and listened and then gave advice on the next step. I was then shortly after booked in for a colonoscopy and endoscopy which was a really smooth process and received my results soon after and he will also guide me on the following steps.

I have never experienced this level of consistent, clear and responsive communication in healthcare. From the very beginning, my doctor has been exceptionally easy to contact. He replies promptly and directly to emails, and I have an ongoing thread of more than thirty messages where he has been fully engaged with every update and concern. He always gives the impression that he is genuinely interested in my case and committed to helping me progress. Scheduling has been effortless. Appointments are arranged quickly, with complete flexibility, and his secretary is always polite, organised and clear on the phone. The coordination between them makes the whole process smooth and stress-free. The combination of accessibility, professionalism and genuine care has set a standard I have not seen anywhere else in healthcare. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for thorough, reliable and well-communicated private medical care.

I attend to see Dr Phillips for a consultation, then attend 2 weeks later for a colonoscopy. Dr Phillips and his team are very professional, explained everything in detail and no question was left unanswered. The process from beginning to end was explained well.

Parking at the hospital or nearby if the limited onsite space is already full , is a just a matter of luck. The coffee machine in the private lounge was out of order. Dr Phillips was on time, personable, open and explained the various investigation options at the initial consultation. All my questions were thoughtfully answered in clear concise terms. There is probably going to be a 3 week wait between the initial consultation and the recommended investigation action
