Dr Edel O'Toole

Dr Edel O'Toole is a highly distinguished Consultant Dermatologist and Professor of Molecular Dermatology who provides expert care for patients with a broad spectrum of skin conditions. With a focus on both clinical practice and scientific research, Dr O'Toole is recognised internationally for her leadership in diagnosing and treating complex dermatological disorders. She is dedicated to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care, ensuring that adults, children, and families facing skin health challenges receive reassuring guidance and individually tailored treatment strategies.

In her clinical practice, Dr O'Toole specialises in medical dermatology, paediatric dermatology, and rare genetic skin diseases, known as genodermatoses. She possesses expertise in managing inherited skin conditions, including various forms of ichthyosis, palmoplantar keratodermas, and pachyonychia congenita, alongside common and severe conditions such as atopic eczema. Her clinical approach integrates thorough diagnostic evaluations, clinical phenotyping, and genetic insights with advanced therapeutic options to alleviate symptoms, improve skin barrier function, and enhance long-term quality of life.

Dr O'Toole earned her medical degree and PhD from University College Galway in Ireland. She completed extensive postgraduate clinical training in general medicine and dermatology in Dublin and London, supplemented by a research fellowship in keratinocyte biology in the United States. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, she maintains active involvement with prominent professional bodies, including the British Association of Dermatologists, the British Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the European Society for Dermatological Research. Dr O'Toole also serves as Chair of the Medical Advisory Board for the Ichthyosis Support Group and actively contributes to patient advocacy organisations.
