Dr Shilpa Selvan

Dr Shilpa Selvan is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Basildon University Hospital, where she has worked since 2015. She graduated from Royal Free and University College London Medical School and also completed an intercalated BSc in Pharmacology in 2003. She subsequently undertook specialist rheumatology training within the Oxford Deanery and achieved dual accreditation in Rheumatology and General Medicine in 2015.

Dr Selvan has broad expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of rheumatological conditions, including osteoporosis, gout, inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, connective tissue diseases, soft tissue disorders, back pain, and fibromyalgia. Her clinical practice combines evidence-based medicine with a patient-centred approach tailored to individual needs.

Alongside her clinical work, she has a strong commitment to medical education and training. Between 2016 and 2024, she served as Undergraduate Lead for Medical Education at Basildon University Hospital, overseeing the coordination and delivery of undergraduate medical teaching on behalf of University College London Medical School, including the organisation of final MBBS clinical examinations locally. She also holds the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at University College London.

Her further academic qualifications include a Master’s degree in Medical Education completed through the Royal College of Physicians and University College London in 2023. She is also a member of the Rheumatology Specialty Certificate Examining Board and works as a PACES examiner.

Dr Selvan remains actively involved in rheumatology research, with particular interests in early inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis. She has published widely in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented her work at national and international rheumatology conferences. She is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology.
