About Dr Sanjeev Patel

Dr Sanjeev Patel is a distinguished Consultant Rheumatologist with over three decades of clinical experience. After graduating from the University of Southampton in 1984, he spent two years in Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to the UK to undertake training in general medicine in Portsmouth and Nottingham. He subsequently developed his specialist interest in rheumatology at St George’s and St Helier Hospitals in London, establishing a career focused on the diagnosis and management of complex rheumatological conditions.

Throughout his career, Dr Patel has held significant leadership roles within the medical community, including serving as President of the British Society for Rheumatology. He has made a longstanding contribution to the organisation, including serving as Chair of its Education Committee, and was appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees. He has also contributed to national committees, supporting the development of rheumatology education and standards of care.

Dr Patel currently serves as a Consultant at King’s College Hospital, where he manages complex rheumatological cases and maintains a strong clinical focus on inflammatory conditions. His specialist interests include metabolic bone disease, osteoporosis and bone marrow oedema.

His academic work includes a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nottingham, awarded in 1995. He also serves as Vice Chair of a NICE Health Technology Appraisal Committee, contributing to the national evaluation of healthcare technologies and treatments. His clinical practice is underpinned by comprehensive patient assessment and the long-term management of chronic multi-system disorders.

This was a check-in appointment with Dr Patel after being prescribed a new medication. He always starts with 'how am I'... allows me to speak. He was positive about my blood results, said he felt I was doing well (which is nice to hear) as this condition is very draining and depressing. He also said that I wouldn't have it forever, which was so re-assuring. We agreed way forward, clear plan and review.
