I am a Consultant Rheumatologist with more than 40 years of medical experience and over three decades of specialist experience in rheumatology. I specialise in the diagnosis, investigation and management of complex rheumatological conditions, inflammatory diseases and musculoskeletal disorders, with particular expertise in osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease and bone marrow oedema.
My approach is based on a thorough rheumatological assessment, accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment and management. I see patients with persistent, unexplained or complex symptoms, including joint pain, joint stiffness, joint swelling and other musculoskeletal symptoms. I aim to identify the underlying cause of symptoms and provide patients with a clear explanation of their condition and appropriate options for treatment and long-term management.
I currently work as a Consultant at King’s College Hospital, where I assess and manage patients with a broad range of rheumatological and inflammatory conditions. My clinical interests include complex inflammatory rheumatic diseases, osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease and bone marrow oedema, as well as chronic musculoskeletal and multi-system disorders. I have extensive experience in the specialist assessment and ongoing management of patients with complex rheumatological presentations.
I graduated from the University of Southampton in 1984 and subsequently spent two years in Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to the UK to undertake training in general medicine in Portsmouth and Nottingham. I later developed my specialist interest in rheumatology at St George’s and St Helier Hospitals in London.
Throughout my career, I have held senior leadership positions within UK rheumatology. I served as President of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR), Chair of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the BSR Education Committee. I have also been a Training Programme Director and Chair of the national rheumatology training committee for the Royal College of Physicians. These positions gave me a national role in rheumatology education, professional standards and the development of high-quality clinical care.
My specialist expertise covers rheumatological and inflammatory disease, musculoskeletal conditions, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders. I have particular experience in assessing complex presentations where symptoms may involve the joints, bones, muscles or multiple body systems, and in providing specialist advice on diagnosis, treatment and long-term management.

Very professional and speaks very clearly so you understand
Clear clinical explanation of symptoms and next steps. We may revisit following a referral but I am in a good space with issues. Friendly and knowledgeable with ability to explain clearly. All good. Thank you.
Review and discussion of tests concerning an ongoing condition. Dr Patel carefully mapped out for me dosage changes over the next two months.
Dr Sanjeev Patel has been friendly, professional and informative throughout each consultation. As well as giving space for me to absorb information, asking what I want / need and ensuring I understood each step of the process.
Kind doctor and very thorough. Organised my tests and diagnosed and treated my pain successfully.
Dr Patel is very clear in explaining his diagnosis and management plans and I always feel that I’m clinically in good hands
This was a check-in appointment with Dr Patel after being prescribed a new medication. He always starts with 'how am I'... allows me to speak. He was positive about my blood results, said he felt I was doing well (which is nice to hear) as this condition is very draining and depressing. He also said that I wouldn't have it forever, which was so re-assuring. We agreed way forward, clear plan and review.
