Dr Colaco trained in Clinical Oncology at the Christie before being selected as the first UK doctor to train in proton therapy.
He spent 12 months at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute training in proton therapy.
He spent a further year at Yale University in Connecticut, USA where he was the the first graduate of Yale's Stereotactic Radiotherapy fellowship training in Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases and extra-cranial stereotactic radiotherapy (SABR).
Dr Colaco worked using both Gamma Knife and Cyber-knife technology whilst at Yale to deliver stereotactic radiotherapy.
He has authored several peer reviewed manuscripts in both stereotactic radiotherapy
and proton therapy in international journals and has been an invited speaker at several international meetings on proton therapy and stereotactic radiotherapy.
Upon returning from the USA to The Christie, Dr Colaco was appointed to a leading role in both the Christie proton therapy and stereotactic radiotherapy programs.
He treats primary brain and spine tumours with both proton and X-ray therapy, and brain, bone, lymph node and spinal metastases with stereotactic radiotherapy.
Dr Colaco is currently co-chair for CNS and skull base tumours of the Particle Therapy
Co-operative Group (PTCOG) which leads development of proton therapy for brain
and spine tumours worldwide.
As a member of the UK SABR consortium committee, Dr Colaco helps to lead development of stereotactic radiotherapy (SABR) for spine and bone tumours nationally.
