Dr Michael Mullen

Dr Michael Mullen is a consultant cardiologist who works for the NHS at Barts Heart Centre in London and privately at the Harley Street Clinic. He is an internationally renowned expert in structural heart intervention with nearly 25 years experience at consultant level.  His areas of interest include minimally invasive catheter treatment of heart valve disease including 

- aortic stenosis, TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant)

- edge to edge repair of mitral and tricuspid valve

-Transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve implant

 -congenital cardiology

- ASD (atrial septal defect) closure

- PFO (patent foramen ovale) closure

Dr Mullen graduated from Newcastle University with an MBBS in 1988. In 1991, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London and completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of London in 2001. In 2000, he undertook a Fellowship in Congenital Heart Disease and Structural Heart Intervention at Toronto General Hospital.  He was appointed as a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in 2001 where he lead the structural heart intervention service.  Dr Mullen was an early pioneer of TAVI in the UK being and Mitraclip edge to edge repair of the mitral valve.  In 2010 he moved to UCLH London where he established a new structural intervention service before its merger with Barts Heart Centre in 2015.

Dr Mullen is a member of the British Medical Association and the British Cardiac Intervention Society. He has research interests in valvular heart disease, new device technologies, PFO closure, congenital heart disease, TAVI, and MitraClip. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, a huge and impressive portfolio of research work, as he continues to be at the forefront of medical research to improve outcomes for his patients.
