Dr Jonathan Hoare, Consultant Gastroenterologist, currently works within the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust at St Marys's Hospital. He is highly specialised in performing endoscopic procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of early gut cancer, Barrett's Oesophagus, colonic polyps, swallowing disorders, and complex GI conditions.
Dr Hoare began his medical education at the University of Cambridge and St Mary's Hospital Medical School, graduating in 1993. During his training, he undertook a research degree with the Medical Research Council in molecular biology, he was awarded a PhD for his work in the field in 2001. He also undertook a fellowship at St Mark's Hospital, before he was appointed Consultant at St Mark's Hospital in 2006. Within his current position, he has taken on additional responsibility as the Head of Endoscopy, which he has held for 11 years.
Dr Hoare takes an active role in medical education, holding the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London for the Academic Department of Surgery and Cancer. His excellent work on the colonoscopy insertion technique has been recognised by the field resulting in him being awarded the "Marsha Dreyer" research award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is also an active researcher, having over 35 peer-reviewed publications on endoscopy and other aspects of gastroenterology.

extremely capable and down to earth, and a genius with and Endoscope (painless)

Not having undergone this treatment before, and worrying what might be discovered, I found Dr Hoare and his team ever so kindly and caring, and felt at ease from arrival to departure. I would certainly return in the future if needed.

I chose Dr Hoare based on his experience and expertise as shown in his profile. It was one of my best decisions! Dr Hoare was very approachable, professional and put me at ease. He took the time to obtain a comprehensive history and listened to all of my concerns. He then outlined a course of action which he followed up in a letter. He organised blood tests and an endoscopy. After the endoscopy, I had further questions but instead of insisting I make a follow up appointment he very generously answered my questions in a series of emails. Although the outcome is that my ailment cannot be resolved, Dr Hoare advised me how to manage it currently (through diet) and tests to consider in the future. I have peace of mind knowing it has been fully investigated and that it's not causing me any harm at the moment. In my opinion, Dr Hoare definitely puts his patient's needs first and has extensive expertise and knowledge. I recommend him highly. His PA, Kristina, is wonderful to deal with, friendly and efficient.

Dr Hoare managed to get to the core of an illness that nobody else had been able to diagnose in about 3 minutes. It was great to find someone who was able to extract insights from my symptoms and a variety of tests I'd already done, rather than just go down the usual route of recommend a series of tests for unlikely candidate illnesses.
