I am a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine with over 10 years' experience helping patients recover from injury, manage joint pain, and stay active at every stage of life.
After training at Imperial College School of Medicine, I qualified as a GP before completing four years of specialist training to become a Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine Consultant in 2014. Since then, I have combined elite-level sports medicine with a busy clinical practice for patients of all backgrounds.
I worked as a Sports Doctor at the London 2012 Olympics, and I currently work pitch-side for Harlequins Rugby and as British Athletics Event Lead Doctor, co-ordinating care for international athletics competitions including the Diamond League, Anniversary Games and Indoor Grand Prix.
Alongside my elite work, I enjoy supporting amateur sportspeople, recreational runners, and patients looking to stay active despite arthritis or long-term joint problems.
Specialist expertise
Ultrasound-guided diagnosis and injections - Founder and Clinical lead at The Joint Injection Clinic (Golders Green, Notting Hill & Henley-on-Thames).
Arthritis management - non-surgical treatment for knee, hip, shoulder, hand & wrist arthritis (including steroid, hyaluronic acid, PRP and Arthrosamid injections).
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) - specialist in hydrodilatation/high-volume injection technique for patients with tight, restricted frozen shoulder issues.
Tendon disorders - Achilles, patellar, plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfer's elbow.
Sports injury care from sprains and ligament injuries to overuse problems and rehabilitation.
My approach
My goal is to provide rapid access to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment so you can return to the activities you love. I take a holistic, evidence-based approach, combining advanced imaging, targeted injections, and rehabilitation to achieve the best outcomes.
I have performed tens of thousands of ultrasound-guided injections, with consistently high patient outcomes. Many of my patients are referred by word-of-mouth, physiotherapists, and fellow doctors including GP's and orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr James Thing is professional, clear, helpful, and reassuring in his patient interactions. Patients commend his explanations of conditions such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, Morton’s neuroma, and frozen shoulder. Many patients report effective results from procedures like ultrasound guided steroid injections, which alleviated pain in areas such as the knee and shoulder, improving movement and function. His expertise is highlighted in cases requiring a joint injection.
Dr. Thing was extremely professional in his explanation of what he was going to do, the risks associated and in the actual injection. I've had significant relief from the injection, which has allowed me to resume the strengthening work I need to support long-term knee health.
Dr Thing was very thorough with his examination and great at explaining his findings and treatment programme
Dr Thing is very professional, explained the process well I was able to ask many more questions that I had not thought about during our consultation and he willing answered. I was extremely well looked after.
Appointments on time and I fully understand what the next step is
Didn't really walk away feeling he was invested in my outcome
came to see Dr. James Thing for carpal tunnel symptoms and arthritis in my thumb. I brought my own X-rays, and he also carried out a thorough examination, including an ultrasound. He explained clearly that the most effective treatment would be two injections in the affected areas. The injections were administered with great care, and he took the time to outline what I could expect over the following week. It’s now been five days, and I’m already feeling significant improvement. I would definitely recommend Dr. James Thing.
Dr Thing was very thorough in explaining the issue after asking questions regarding lifestyle etc and carried out some exercises to see the mobility with foot. Listed options with regards to treatment and once decided on injection went through the process and any signs to look out for etc. The procedure was pain free and recommended podiatrist which would give additional support with foot.
Confident and clear Explain the correct problems in shoulder
