Dr Hywel Cooper

I graduated in 1996 with a distinction in primary Bachelor of Medicine at Southampton Medical School and obtained an additional BioMedical Science degree in 1995. I hold an international diploma in Acupuncture from Changchun University Medical School, China since 1992.

Having gained my MRCP in 2000 I began my career in dermatology that year.

I have just stepped down as clinical director after 6 years for dermatology in Portsmouth one of the highest functioning UK departments where over the last 3 years I have evolved our teledermatology service the format of which is being followed elsewhere around the country.

I remain research lead and Portsmouth remains one of the best recruiters to trials for hospitals of it size ensuring access to newer therapies and awareness of cutting edge treatment options. As a trainee I undertook 2 years of research into the mechanisms of drug allergy with publication in respected journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and more recently Nature Communications.

I specialise in skin disease including skin cancer, chronic skin disease, connective tissue diseases and drug allergy. I perform skin surgery including skin cancer, lumps and bumps, skin lesion/blemish removal, diagnostic procedures as well as injection treatment for hyperhidrosis and xanthalasma treatment.
