Dr. George Coltart

Dr George Coltart is a Consultant Dermatologist with specialist expertise in skin cancer and adult medical dermatology. He holds a substantive NHS post at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust, where he manages a wide range of conditions including eczema, psoriasis, acne, urticaria, and autoimmune and autoinflammatory skin disorders. He is highly experienced in the surgical treatment of skin cancers and benign skin lesions and is a member of the UHS skin cancer multidisciplinary team.

Dr Coltart studied medicine at the University of Oxford, where he also completed an intercalated degree in Physiological Sciences. Following this, he was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in dermatology in Southampton. He is currently undertaking a PhD supported by a prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship, with research focusing on tumour immunology and skin cancer biology. As part of this work, he pioneered an award-winning innovative tissue culture system that models tumour responses to immunotherapy.

In addition to his core research, Dr Coltart has contributed to several important areas of dermatological science. These include strategies to reduce patient anxiety during dermatological surgery, investigating long-term cancer risks associated with narrow-band UVB phototherapy, developing approaches for early intervention in pre-malignant skin changes, and exploring the application of artificial intelligence in classifying inflammatory skin diseases. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented at leading national and international conferences.

Dr Coltart is also dedicated to teaching and training. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from University College London and the Royal College of Physicians, and is actively involved in the supervision and education of medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff.
