Dr David McKean

Dr David McKean is a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr McKean studied medicine at St John's College, Oxford, completed his training at the Oxford School of Radiology and sub-specialised in Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

He is currently the Clinical Lead for Radiology at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Director of the Stoke Mandeville Musculoskeletal & Spinal Radiology Fellowship, Radiology Lead for the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) MDT, and has previously acted as Associate Medical Director for Research and Innovation.

Dr McKean is committed to providing the highest levels of clinical care for his patients and has received excellent patient feedback, as a result of which he was listed in Doctify's 'Top 100 Medical Professionals' list for 2026 (https://www.doctify.com/uk/specialist/dr-david-mckean).

Dr McKean is at the forefront of MSK and spinal innovation. He performed the first case of basivertebral nerve ablation using the Intracept device in Europe (https://www.buckshealthcare.nhs.uk/blog/2025/07/24/trust-radiology-team-completes-first-intracept-procedure-for-chronic-low-back-pain-relief-in-europe/) and performed the first case of electrochemotherapy for radioresistant epidural metastases in the UK (https://www.buckshealthcare.nhs.uk/blog/2024/05/16/trust-radiology-team-perform-first-uk-case-of-electrochemotherapy-on-spinal-tumour/). Dedicated to teaching and lecturing, Dr McKean served as Secretary of the British Society of Skeletal Radiology (BSSR) from 2023 to 2025, and will serve as Vice-President from 2026 to 2028, before becoming President from 2028 to 2030. He is also a member of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) Intervention Subcommittee and the International Skeletal Society (ISS) Social Media Subcommittee.

Dr McKean is active in research and teaching regarding musculoskeletal injury, complex spinal cord injury and image-guided musculoskeletal intervention. He has published over 50 papers in high-impact journals such as JAMA, Neurology, Skeletal Radiology, Bone and Joint, and Nature Spinal Cord and has over 1000 citations.

His professional qualifications and memberships include Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists, member of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR), member of the International Skeletal Society (ISS), and member of the British Society of Skeletal Radiology (BSSR).
