Dr Aymer Postgate is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with extensive expertise in complex and interventional endoscopy. He graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, in 1999 with First Class Honours and received numerous academic awards during his training, including the Baldwin Prize for Clinical Medicine, the Bristowe Medal and Beaney Prize for Pathology, the War Memorial Clinical Exhibition award, and a Wolfson Foundation scholarship for his intercalated BSc studies.
He completed his core medical training at Charing Cross and West Middlesex Hospitals before undertaking specialist training in gastroenterology and general medicine across the North West London region between 2003 and 2010. During this period, he spent four years at St Mark’s Hospital, including three years in the internationally recognised Wolfson Unit for Endoscopy. His postgraduate research there led to the award of a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from Imperial College London in 2010. He further developed his subspecialist expertise through a six-month ERCP fellowship at Hammersmith Hospital prior to his appointment as a full-time NHS Consultant at Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2010.
In his NHS practice, Dr Postgate undertakes a wide range of advanced and interventional upper and lower endoscopy procedures, including ERCP and large colonic polyp removal, and he leads the capsule endoscopy service at his Trust. He provides outpatient and endoscopy services at both Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital, managing the full spectrum of gastroenterology conditions, as well as general hepatology and pancreatobiliary disease. He also looks after a large cohort of inflammatory bowel disease patients in his weekly IBD clinic at Mount Vernon Hospital. He looks after acute medical and gastroenterology / hepatology in-patients at Hillingdon Hospital and provides emergency gastroenterology cover at Hillingdon and Harefield Hospitals.
Dr Postgate has been actively involved in research and academic publishing, with multiple publications in the fields of interventional endoscopy and capsule endoscopy. He has authored and peer-reviewed articles for international medical journals.
Dr Postgate endeavours to engage with all of his patients in a timely, courteous and friendly manner, to explore their symptoms and concerns in depth and arrange relevant investigation if required, and to present a clear opinion and treatment plan tailored to each patient, involving them in every step of the process.
