About Dr Abbas Ismail
Dr Abbas Ismail is a Consultant in Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease. Please note that he currently only sees patients with osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders.
He qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1989 before completing specialist training in leading centres in London, Sheffield, and Manchester. He was appointed Consultant in 2000.
Dr Ismail holds an NHS post at Stockport Hospital. He has a long-standing academic and clinical interest in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. Following a Wellcome Trust fellowship, he undertook large-scale European research into osteoporosis in both men and women, resulting in an MD thesis from the University of Manchester and multiple peer-reviewed publications.
In 2004, Dr Ismail established the Osteoporosis Service in Stockport and later developed a Fracture Prevention Nurse-Led Service. He currently serves as Director of the Osteoporosis Service at Stockport NHS Trust, receiving regional referrals for complex bone health cases.
His clinical leadership and research contributions have helped shape osteoporosis management pathways, particularly in fracture prevention and long-term bone health optimisation.

I know Dr Ismail from many years he is always been best
Listened to my problem patiently and with concern, very professional, explained his diagnosis and treatment to me, and explained the other possible test that might be needed if the advised treatment was not effective.
He listened attentively. He read my notes thoroughly. He then proceeded to dig deeper into my problems and followed up with a physical examination. After all that he gave me a well considered diagnosis and recommendations for a way forward. Importantly, at no time did I feel time pressure. I was well satisfied with my consultation.
