Professor Deborah Bruce is a highly experienced consultant gynaecologist, nationally
recognised menopause specialist, and senior medical educator with over 30
years’ experience across clinical practice, research, leadership, and
undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. She trained in the South-West
Thames region and obtained a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in
obstetrics and gynaecology in January 2010.
She iscurrently Professor in Medical Education at the University of Surrey,
serving as Deputy Dean and Deputy Head of School and Programme
Director/Head of Teaching and Learning, where she has played a central role
in establishing the new Graduate Entry Medical School, which opened in
September 2024. Her work includes curriculum design, admissions, assessment,
widening participation, simulation strategy (commended by the GMC), and
extensive innovation to support international and UK medical students.
Clinically, she is an Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS
Foundation Trust, appointed at King's College London/Guy's and St Thomas'
NHS Foundation Trust in January 2011, after working in a locum capacity as Consultant
Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Sept 2009- Jan 2011. She is the lead for
menopause services at Guy's and St Thomas' and has developed rapid-access
menopause clinics for NHS staff, specialist services for POI, oncology and
complex HRT, and regional GP guidelines, significantly improving access and
quality of care. She is a BMS-accredited menopause specialist and
trainer and an ARCP assessor and RCOG MRCOG Part 3 examiner.
Academically, Professor Bruce holds a MD from the University of London, is a Fellow
of the RCOG (FRCOG), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA),
and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators (FAoME). Her
research focuses on menopause, POI, women’s health services, and medical
education. She is a Principal Investigator for the NIHR-funded POISE
trial and has an extensive publication record including clinicaltrials, audits, reviewstextbook chapters, and recent accepted papers in Medical
Teacher and Post Reproductive Health.
She has held senior leadership roles at King’s College London Medical School,
including Director of Clinical Practice, Graduate Entry Medicine Lead, and
Theme/Block Lead, where she shaped curricula in clinical skills, prescribing,
professionalism, cultural competence, and intimate examination teaching. She
pioneered Clinical Teaching Associate programmes for female and male intimate
examinations, now widely recognised.
Professor Bruce is deeply committed to student support, widening access,
interprofessional education, simulation, assessment, and quality improvement.
She has supervised postgraduate researchers, examined nationally and
internationally, served on GMC and RCOG committees, and lectures regularly to
government, professional bodies, and international audiences.
