Dr Daniel Edward Lumsden

Dr Daniel Edward Lumsden is a dedicated Consultant Paediatric Neurologist who specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of complex neurological conditions in children and young people. Serving as a Clinical Lead within paediatric neuroscience services, he provides compassionate, patient-centred care designed to support children with severe neurological challenges and enhance their overall quality of life. His clinical practice focuses on multidisciplinary care, integrating medical, surgical, and therapeutic approaches tailored to the unique goals of young patients and their families.

Dr Lumsden possesses extensive clinical expertise in childhood movement disorders, including dystonia, chorea, and hyperkinetic movement disorders, as well as complex motor disabilities and Rett syndrome. He is a recognised specialist in advanced neuromodulation therapies, particularly deep brain stimulation, where he utilises precision neuroimaging to plan and optimise surgical interventions for young individuals with severe movement impairments. In addition to his focus on complex motor disorders, his clinical practice encompasses acute neurology and paediatric epilepsy, delivering comprehensive medical care to children experiencing complex neurodevelopmental conditions.

Dr Lumsden completed his primary medical education at the University of Cambridge, obtaining a BA (Hons) in Medical Sciences before qualifying in medicine in 2004. He further advanced his academic training by completing a Master of Science in Clinical Paediatrics at University College London in 2008, followed by a PhD focused on neuroimaging in patient selection and surgical planning for deep brain stimulation in childhood dystonia. He achieved Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2005 and holds a leadership role as Chair of the British Paediatric Neurological Association Movement Disorders Special Interest Group.

Combining clinical practice with academic research, Dr Lumsden serves as an Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer and leads national collaborative initiatives dedicated to improving management standards for paediatric movement disorders. He remains committed to translating scientific research into meaningful clinical treatments, ensuring that the personal priorities and well-being of young patients and their families remain at the core of all care plans.
