About Dr Charis Costopoulos

Dr Charis Costopoulos is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in Interventional and General Cardiology at the world-renowned Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He sees private patients both at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and at the prestigious One Heart Clinic in London. He has vast clinical expertise in both general and interventional cardiology with clinical interests surrounding the treatment and management of numerous cardiology conditions, including: chest pain, valvular heart disease, arrhythmia, palpitations, heart failure and hypertension. He also is an expert in the percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease using angiography and stent implantation as well as the treatment of structural heart disease (TAVI and MitraClip amongst other structural interventions).

Dr Costopoulos graduated in medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2005 with distinction and completed his core medical training in centres across Cambridge, Oxford and London. During his training he also completed an MPhil degree in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Cambridge in 2010. Following his core training, he began his specialist cardiology training in the North West London Deanery, spending the majority of his time at Hammersmith Hospital.

He later undertook a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the one of the best European cardiology centres, San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Italy, completing it in 2013. He then completed further Interventional Cardiology fellowships at Hammersmith Hospital. He returned to the University of Cambridge to carry out research on the role of biochemical forces in coronary atherosclerosis and was awarded a PhD for his work in 2017. He published his research works in high impact journals such as the European Heart Journal and has over 50 peer-reviewed journals . He has presented his work in conferences throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

Dr Costopoulos also held the position of British Heart Foundation Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge which allowed him to pursue both his research and clinical interests. During this post, he continued to practice at Hammersmith Hospital before being appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Papworth Hospital.

Dr Costopoulos has provided me with excellent care since my sudden heart attack over two years ago. Quick to respond to any emails or queries, and always willing to give time to explain results and medications and answer any questions. I am incredibly grateful.
