Dr Ben Mercer

Dr Ben Mercer is a Consultant Cardiologist and Consultant Electrophysiologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. He is Clinical Lead for Electrophysiology and Catheter Ablation at Leeds General Infirmary and also practises privately at Spire Leeds Hospital. His expertise spans the full spectrum of cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ectopic beats, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, inherited arrhythmia syndromes and disorders of slow heart rhythm.

Dr Mercer has a particular interest in catheter ablation and offers the full range of contemporary ablation procedures for both common and highly complex heart rhythm disorders. He is experienced in the use of advanced three-dimensional mapping technologies and all modern energy modalities, including radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation and Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). He is a high volume catheter ablation operator and performs ablation for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, SVT, ventricular ectopy and ventricular tachycardia, tailoring treatment to each patient's individual condition. Whether treating straightforward arrhythmias or complex cases that have failed previous therapies, his focus is on delivering the most effective and least invasive treatment strategy available.

In addition to catheter ablation, Dr Mercer specialises in the implantation and follow-up of cardiac rhythm management devices, including pacemakers, complex pacing systems, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). He is committed to providing personalised, evidence-based care, ensuring that each patient receives treatment tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.

After graduating from the University of Leeds Medical School in 2007, Dr Mercer undertook extensive specialist training in Cardiology and Electrophysiology throughout the West Yorkshire region. Alongside his clinical training, he pursued research in vascular biology and the effects of diabetes on blood vessel repair, leading to the award of a PhD from the University of Leeds in 2014.  His research has included work in atrial fibrillation and other areas of cardiology, and he has published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

He is a member of the British Heart Rhythm Society and remains actively involved in the development and delivery of advanced electrophysiology services, helping to bring innovative technologies and treatment strategies to patients across the region.
