Overview
Dr Ankur Gulati is a highly experienced consultant cardiologist. His NHS practice is established at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Lewisham Greenwich NHS Trusts, where he cares for patients with all types of cardiac problems, such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, high/low blood pressure, dizzy spells and blackouts. He graduated from Cambridge University with a triple first class honours degree, and was selected to undergo further training at Harvard Medical School, where he was awarded High Honours for his Cardiology sub-internship. Having gained all his junior doctor posts at nationally acclaimed teaching hospitals across the UK, he completed his specialist cardiology training at centres of excellence in London, including Barts Heart Centre, Royal Brompton and University College London. His advanced coronary stenting skillsets have been further validated by intensive fellowship training at reputed PCI centres in the UK and abroad.
Research
Dr Gulati's research work, conducted at the Royal Brompton Hospital, has revolved around the role of MRI in evaluating patients with heart failure. His ground-breaking contributions to this field have received worldwide attention, and resulted in numerous first-author publications in prestigious international journals such as JAMA, JACC, and Circulation. He earned his MD degree from Cambridge University and was honoured with the International Young Investigator of the Year Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

I was referred to Dr Gulati to obtain cardiac clearance for surgery due to a family history of cardiac arrests. What I expected to be a routine assessment turned into a truly exceptional example of medical care. Dr Gulati was determined to be thorough. He arranged a 48-hour Holter monitor, a stress test, and an echocardiogram to comprehensively assess my heart. While the Holter monitor and stress test were both reassuring, the echocardiogram revealed some unusual findings. Instead of dismissing them (given that the other tests showed a good function of the heart), Dr Gulati decided to investigate further and ordered a cardiac MRI to ensure nothing had been overlooked. That decision proved life-changing. The MRI revealed that I had an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a congenital heart condition that had already caused significant enlargement of my heart. Although I had no symptoms, the condition could have had serious long-term consequences if it had remained undiagnosed. I firmly believe that this diagnosis was made because of Dr Gulati's diligence and commitment to leaving no stone unturned. He not only identified a condition that others might have missed, but also referred me to an excellent surgeon for the necessary treatment.
