About Mr Anil Agarwal

Mr Anil Agarwal is a Consultant Surgeon with over 24 years of experience, specialising in general surgery, lower gastrointestinal surgery, minimally invasive (keyhole) procedures, and endoscopy. His clinical practice includes both diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), as well as a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions. He performs laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

He has a strong subspecialist focus on laparoscopic surgery, including gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), and both open and keyhole hernia repairs (inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and incisional). He also treats a broad spectrum of anorectal conditions such as haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulae, pilonidal disease, and rectal prolapse. His practice includes procedures such as Doppler-guided haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HALO/THD) and robotic mesh rectopexy.

Mr Agarwal has held senior leadership roles within the NHS, including Clinical Director of Surgery and Urology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, and Associate Medical Director at the same trust. He contributes to undergraduate medical education as Lead for Teaching at the University of Sunderland and previously served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Durham (Queen’s Campus, Stockton-on-Tees).

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he is an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is a Performance Assessor and Team Leader for the General Medical Council.

He has also contributed to surgical education at a national level as editor and contributor to key reference texts, including the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery and the Oxford Handbook of Operative Surgery.

His clinical interests include laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, endoscopy, haemorrhoid treatments, and the management of a wide range of general and colorectal conditions such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and changes in bowel habit.

This was a follow up appointment and as was the case with my initial appointment it was conducted in an exemplary and very professional yet friendly manner. All aspects were covered in detail, both in discussion and via photographic evidence which was used to clearly explain the situation. At no time was the procedure rushed, indeed the opposite as I was given ample time to understand what I was being shown and told together with being afforded the time to ask further questions where I needed to. Mr Agarwal had a clear understanding of any concerns I had and went above what was required to allay those concerns.

Although my appointment was delayed by an hour , both reception and Dr Agarwal were apologetic and courteous. Appreciate that when it cam to hands on investigation due to the area he went a got a female nurse to chaperone this part of the appointment.
