Orthopaedic Surgeon
London, SE1 7EH
Mr Alex Charalambous is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with a specialised focus on hip and knee surgery. His main interests include partial, total, and revision knee replacements.
Mr Charalambous earned his MBChB degree from the University of Bristol in 2010. During this time, he also obtained a BSc with First Class Honours in Human Musculoskeletal Science. His professional career began with foundation training in London and subsequent specialty training on the Royal London Hospital training programme. This involved experience in several highly regarded Orthopaedic units dealing with a variety of trauma and orthopaedic pathology in a diverse group of patients.
Mr Charalambous continued to expand his expertise with an international fellowship in Arthroplasty and Lower Extremity Reconstruction. This was undertaken with the University of Toronto as part of the Sunnybrook Holland Bone and Joint Program, one of the highest volume arthroplasty units in North America. This experience shaped his current practice by allowing him to identify key elements that improve patient safety, reduce length of stay and optimise outcomes following hip and knee replacement. He has presented and published on his work internationally.
On his return to the UK, Mr Charalambous undertook further fellowship training at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. As one of the leading revision centres in the UK, this has given him the experience to offer patients high standards of care in the full spectrum of knee replacement surgery. He continued here as a consultant, where he was involved in the teaching and training of medical students from the University of Oxford.
Mr Charalambous continued his consultant practice at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust where he was subsequently appointed to a full time post. As one of the country's leading teaching hospitals and a tertiary referral centre, Mr Charalambous is able to offer patients treatment for a variety of complex hip and knee conditions.
His commitment to patient care, teaching and medical research has continued throughout his career. Mr Charalambous is actively involved in clinical research and in supervising junior trainees. He has extensive experience in simulation training and is a faculty member for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course of the Royal College of Surgeons.
