Mr Alex Charalambous is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with a specialised focus on hip and knee surgery. His main interests include partial, total, and revision knee replacements.
Mr Charalambous earned his MBChB degree from the University of Bristol in 2010. During this time, he also obtained a BSc with First Class Honours in Human Musculoskeletal Science. His professional career began with foundation training in London and subsequent specialty training on the Royal London Hospital training programme. This involved experience in several highly regarded Orthopaedic units dealing with a variety of trauma and orthopaedic pathology in a diverse group of patients.
Mr Charalambous continued to expand his expertise with an international fellowship in Arthroplasty and Lower Extremity Reconstruction. This was undertaken with the University of Toronto as part of the Sunnybrook Holland Bone and Joint Program, one of the highest volume arthroplasty units in North America. This experience shaped his current practice by allowing him to identify key elements that improve patient safety, reduce length of stay and optimise outcomes following hip and knee replacement. He has presented and published on his work internationally.
On his return to the UK, Mr Charalambous undertook further fellowship training at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. As one of the leading revision centres in the UK, this has given him the experience to offer patients high standards of care in the full spectrum of knee replacement surgery. He continued here as a consultant, where he was involved in the teaching and training of medical students from the University of Oxford.
Mr Charalambous continued his consultant practice at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust where he was subsequently appointed to a full time post. As one of the country's leading teaching hospitals and a tertiary referral centre, Mr Charalambous is able to offer patients treatment for a variety of hip and knee conditions.
His commitment to patient care, teaching and medical research has continued throughout his career. Mr Charalambous is actively involved in clinical research and in supervising junior trainees. He has extensive experience in simulation training and is a faculty member for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course of the Royal College of Surgeons.

I have had a wholly positive experience during my treatment and surgery . I am very grateful for my surgery which has restored my knee and allowed me to walk pain free. Mr Charalambous has been kind and professional throughout.
Mr Charalambous was professional to the core, it was a pleasure to be treated by him. His description of what my surgery entailed was informative and reassuring at all times. The surgery itself (hip replacement) was as good as one could have wished. I would recommend him to anyone.
I had a right total knee replacement 6 months ago at St Thomas's hospital and my surgeon was Mr Charalambous. I am very happy with the outcome and no longer have any pain in my right knee (though it can feel stiff occasionally). My scar is neat. I am on a waiting list for the left knee with him. I wouldn't go to another surgeon. He explains the process well in his meeting before and on the day. The only (negative) comment I would make is if he could visit after the operation. His team came instead but it would have been good if he had too, at least once. Hopefully he will next time.
I have been under Mr Charalamous's care for around 3 years. I have always found him to be easy to talk to & he explains things in a way i can understand. I had a botched knee replacement at Kim's in Maidstone which was very painful. After a few meetings to discuss what could be done we agreed a procedure. I have to say i am over the moon with the results. The recovery time was extremely short, after the insert replacement i was up & walking with no sticks inside 2 weeks. I am extremely happy & will request Mr Charalamous for me left knee once it gets to a point where it needs replacement. Top Surgeon.
I came for a check up of my hip Replacement due to an accident and Mr Charalambous was very pleased with my progress and discharged me but reassured me if I had any problems to get back to him.
He was informative and reassuring. I felt he understood my concerns and aspirations.
My operation by mr Charalambous was a complete success. I must say my scar is very very neat. It was my first time in hospital other than childbirth and I was completely put at ease. I was very impressed that he came to the ward after the operation to see how I was progressing and reassured me about my recovery. My operation was explained very well to me and the aftercare was exemplary. Today Mr Charalambous saw me in a follow up clinic where he completely put my mind at ease with a couple of questions I asked him.
