Alex Townsend is a Podiatrist at Pure Sports Medicine St Paul’s and Canary Wharf. He completed his Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Podiatry at the University of Southampton in the summer of 2015. Since then, he has gained experience in both the NHS and private sectors, delivering advanced and high-quality foot care. He has expertise in managing acute diabetic ulcerations, sporting injuries, nail surgery, and routine podiatry care, as well as musculoskeletal and sports injury management. Biomechanics and gait analysis, foot orthoses therapy, sport-specific footwear modification, and sports injury management are his primary areas of interest.
Since 2019, Alex has served as a senior podiatrist volunteer at Ultra Marathons organised by Action Challenge. His recent expedition took him to the Sahara Desert, where he provided podiatric care and guidance to race participants. Additionally, he volunteers annually at the London Marathon, offering medical care to both professional and amateur athletes.
Alongside his clinical work, Alex is an avid triathlete and cyclist, actively participating with the Thames Turbo Triathlon Club in South West London. Notably, he competed in Ironman UK 2022 and the Thames Path 100km Ultra Marathon. This enthusiasm for endurance sports fuelled his specialisation in podiatric sports medicine and exercise-related injuries. In 2018, completed PGCert in Podiatric Sports Medicine at Queen Mary’s University of London.

Alex helped me work towards a solution for my injury with my foot, initially I thought it was something that couldn’t be helped however he worked with me to solve this !
After a frustrating year with an ankle injury sustained playing football, seeing Alex at PSM has been great. Alex provided a detailed analysis of my gait and took a 3D scan of my foot to create orthoses customised to me. He also clearly explained what was going on with my ankle and how it can get better, having done a number of tests to pinpoint the issue. Highly recommend Alex for anyone struggling with a foot-related sports injury.
Alex was friendly and informative, he ensured my questions with depth and took the time to help me educate me on my issue
I saw their podiatrist, Alex Townsend, and I was very impressed by how thoroughly he took my history and examined my foot. I really felt he listened. He is clearly very knowledgable and the advice he gave me was tailored to the specifics of my life in a way that has made it very easy for me to put into practice straight away. I have started to see improvement within a day or two and am confident that the issue will be resolved soon thanks to to his advice and careful explanation. I would highly recommend Alex.
Alex was receptive and informative and very knowledgeable in his field. He ensured I understood the mechanics that were in play with my problem and laid out several options as remedies. And there has been instant improvement. Cannot recommend him highly enough. Thank you
Alex as i mentioned before was great! He took a real interest in my particular issues, and made sure that we worked together to get the the right solution
Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to thoroughly investigate my issue before recommending a solution. His suggestion to try a specific foot sole worked perfectly—and I noticed the results instantly after buying it! He’s also very friendly and clearly knows what he’s doing. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for expert and reliable advice.
I had a fantastic experience with Alex, who made me a pair of custom insoles for my cycling shoes. The process was very slick, and Alex clearly has a lot of expertise in this area. I've been using mine for a while now without any issues, and my shoes feel much more comfortable and my feet a lot more supported too! Would happily recommend to any cyclist looking to change up their cycling shoes or with any foot issues from cycling
Alex is a wonderful colleague that I have no hesitatancy in referring patients to. He is very thorough, knowledgeable and provides a really comprehensive podiatric service. My patients that see him always speak incredibly highly of him!
