About Mr Adam Cox

Mr Adam Christopher Cox is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon in South East Wales. He sees private patients at St Joseph's Hospital in Newport.

Mr Cox is an expert in investigating and managing diseases of the prostate gland. The facilities at St Joseph's Hospital allow Mr Cox to offer a comprehensive service for men concerned about prostate cancer and those that wish to treat their urinary symptoms or urine retention. He is one of only a few urological surgeons in the UK with the subspecialist expertise to perform robotic surgery for prostate cancer, and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) - see below.

Mr Cox was awarded a postgraduate doctorate (MD) by Cardiff University following scientific research into mechanisms of prostate cancer development at the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute. He later went on to complete sub-specialist training in prostate cancer and robotic surgery under the mentorship of some of the UK's leading experts in the field.

HoLEP for Benign Prostate Enlargement

HoLEP (CCSD code M6533) is the gold-standard surgical treatment for men with enlarged prostates i.e. prostate volumes >80cc (the average prostate volume is approximately 30cc).  Mr Cox is a high-volume HoLEP surgeon, and he regularly operates on prostates up to 500cc in volume in both his NHS and private practice.  He therefore attracts tertiary referrals from all over Wales and the South West for challenging cases.

Prostate Cancer

As not all prostate cancers require treatment, Mr Cox prides himself on personalising care tailored to the individual rather than adopting a 'one size fits all'  approach.

He is experienced at local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsy (CCSD code M6583) to diagnose suspected prostate cancer.  He performs robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (CCSD code M6192) using the state-of-the-art Intuitive Da Vinci Xi system, and he is part of an innovative team that offers same-day discharge for men with localised prostate cancer by employing enhanced recovery techniques.  Mr Cox has forged close ties with expert clinical oncologists for men that require non-surgical treatments for prostate cancer.

General Urology

In addition, Mr Cox possesses a comprehensive understanding of general urological complaints, including the investigation and diagnosis of all suspected urological cancers (i.e. of the kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicle) and the management of erectile dysfunction.

Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments

Investigation of male urinary symptoms, blood in urine (haematuria) and raised PSA

HoLEP - Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate - laser surgery for prostate enlargement

Robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer including nerve-sparing

Investigation and treatment of testicular and scrotal swellings

Management of erectile dysfunction

Treatment of urethral strictures

I was admitted on 18th April for a HoLEP procedure, which was performed by Mr Adam Cox, and stayed in the hospital for one night. The surgery itself was excellent, and I felt completely confident in the care I received throughout. I’m very grateful to Mr Adam Cox for his professionalism and skill, as well as to the nursing staff who were supportive, attentive, and reassuring during my stay. Their care made a real difference, especially during my overnight recovery. Overall, I had a very positive experience, the operation was a 100% success and would highly recommend the team to anyone undergoing a similar procedure.

Dr Cox has been outstanding from the initial consultation through to the surgery. He was recommended to me by a family member (who’s a GP) and he wasn’t wrong - superb surgeon, very knowledgeable and a bedside manner that aligns perfectly with me. Thank you Dr Cox
