Dr Michael Bruce Johnson

Dr Michael Bruce Johnson is a highly regarded Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Paediatric Surgery, with a dedicated focus on spinal deformities and complex musculoskeletal conditions in children. He is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centred care, ensuring that young patients and their families feel supported throughout their treatment journey. His clinical practice encompasses a wide range of paediatric orthopaedic conditions, with a particular subspecialty interest in scoliosis and spine deformity surgery. Dr Johnson is also known for introducing innovative, minimally invasive surgical techniques to Australia, such as the Bipolar Instrumentation system for managing neuromuscular scoliosis, which aims to improve patient outcomes and recovery times.

Dr Johnson completed his medical degree at Monash University in 1991. He subsequently undertook extensive Orthopaedic Training across several leading training centres in Victoria, obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2000. To further refine his expertise in specialist paediatric orthopaedics, he completed prestigious international fellowships in Oregon, USA, and Toronto, Canada. These opportunities allowed him to gain advanced training in complex spinal deformity surgery, club-foot management, and neuromuscular diseases.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Johnson is actively involved in research and medical education. His research interests include early-onset spinal deformity treatment, cervical spine injuries in children, and scoliosis in patients with cerebral palsy. He contributes to the training of future Orthopaedic Surgeons and medical students, sharing his extensive knowledge and clinical insights. Dr Johnson is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Scoliosis Research Society. He also holds active memberships with the Australian Orthopaedic Association, the Australian Medical Association, and the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society, where he has previously served as Secretary and Coordinator of the Annual Instructional Course.
