Associate Professor Kiarash Taghavi is a Paediatric Urologist based in Melbourne, Australia. He gained his medical degree from the University of Otago (NZ) before undertaking specialist training in Paediatric Surgery with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Through his surgical training he gained experience across Australia and New Zealand. Following fellowship training, he completed post-fellowship training in Paediatric Urology at the RCH in Melbourne. He has visited leading Paediatric Eurology centres including Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades in Paris.
Kiarash has completed formal training and proctorship in robot-assisted surgery for children, holding credentials from the International Medical Robotics Academy and has been trained on the da Vinci system. He further refined his expertise by completing masterclass training at IRCAD in France.
Beyond the operating theatre, Dr Taghavi is engaged in system development by co-convening surgical robotics summits and establishing a national prospective paediatric robotic database.
His clinical scope encompasses the evaluation and surgical management of congenital and acquired urological and general paediatric conditions, including hypospadias and chordee, undescended testes, hernias, hydroceles, urinary incontinence, and complex conditions such as posterior urethral valves.
A dedicated researcher and educator, Kiarash has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and 15 book chapters. He holds post-graduate qualifications in surgical anatomy, paediatrics, clinical education, and health informatics. He actively serves on multiple RACS surgical and anatomy subcommittees, as well as the European Society for Paediatric Urology (YPUC), and acts as a specialty editor for multiple specialty journals.
