Dr. Akalya Mahendran

Dr. Akalya Mahendran is a highly qualified Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist who is dedicated to providing holistic, patient-focused care. She specialises in diagnosing and managing a wide range of digestive and liver conditions, ensuring that each patient receives an individualised and evidence-based treatment plan. With a compassionate approach, Dr. Mahendran aims to make consultations comfortable and reassuring, working collaboratively with patients to improve their health outcomes and overall well-being.

Dr. Mahendran completed her Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctorate of Medicine at the University of New South Wales, followed by a Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney. She completed her comprehensive Gastroenterology and Hepatology training across several major tertiary referral hospitals in Sydney, alongside her General Physician training. Admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2022, she is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Additionally, she serves as a Councillor with the Australian Medical Association New South Wales, demonstrating her commitment to ongoing medical advocacy and community health.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Mahendran has a strong sub-specialty interest in inflammatory bowel disease, functional gut disorders, and women's health. She is highly skilled in performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and has gained valuable exposure to transplant hepatology. Passionate about preventative care, she actively participates in bowel cancer screening and collaborative bowel cancer care. Dr. Mahendran is also deeply committed to improving health literacy and access to healthcare within culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
