Dr David Joseph

Dr David Joseph is an extensively trained General Surgeon based in Sydney, specialising in Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Bariatric surgery. He completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1996 before undertaking specialist training in General Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals. In 2002, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, marking an important milestone in his specialist training and providing the foundation for his subsequent career in surgical oncology.

Dr Joseph further developed his expertise through international fellowship training, including at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a high-volume centre where he gained experience in complex transplant and bariatric procedures. Over more than two decades of surgical practice, he has developed expertise in both advanced laparoscopic techniques and the management of complex upper GI conditions.

He currently serves as Chair of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at The Mater Hospital in Sydney, combining clinical practice with a leadership role in the delivery of gastrointestinal surgical care. His specialist practice encompasses benign and malignant conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract, including diseases of the liver, stomach and pancreas. He also has extensive experience in bariatric surgery, providing comprehensive care and performing procedures including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and complex revision surgery. His use of minimally invasive techniques is focused on supporting effective treatment while facilitating recovery and reducing postoperative burden.
