Dr Abigail Tenen

Associate Professor Abigail Tenen is a highly regarded Melbourne-based ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon specialising in refractive and corneal surgery. Dedicated to providing customised, holistic care, she is recognised as a pioneer in her field, notably being the first female surgeon in Australia to qualify in the use of intralense femtosecond laser technology. Her clinical practice primarily focuses on advanced laser eye surgery and the management of complex corneal conditions.

Beyond her clinical practice, Dr Tenen is deeply committed to medical education and research. She holds academic appointments as an Associate Professor for the School of Rural Medicine at Charles Sturt University and as a Senior Lecturer for the School of Primary Healthcare in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University. Her research interests include the cutting-edge use of mesenchymal stem cells in regenerative medicine and the application of neuroplasticity to improve visual outcomes. She also serves as a Section Editor for a prominent global ophthalmic journal and is a frequent speaker at local and international conferences.

Dr Tenen completed her medical training with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours in 1996. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Her professional affiliations include active membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, where she also serves as an executive committee member.
