I am a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, based primarily at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. I specialise in the management of spinal deformity in children, teenagers and young adults, working within a highly experienced multidisciplinary team treating conditions such as idiopathic scoliosis, neuromuscular deformity, skeletal dysplasia and neurofibromatosis.
My consultant career began in Oxford, where I cared for both adult and paediatric patients with the full spectrum of spinal conditions, including trauma, infection, degenerative disease and complex deformity. This experience provided a strong foundation in spinal surgery and continues to inform my holistic, long-term approach to treating young people as they transition into adulthood.
By way of background, I completed my medical training at Imperial College London with distinction before undertaking specialist orthopaedic training in London. To further strengthen my experience in spinal surgery, I completed a series of high-volume fellowships, including the National Spine Fellowship and advanced deformity fellowships at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. I was also honoured to receive competitive travelling fellowship awards from both the British Orthopaedic Association and AO Spine, enabling me to visit internationally recognised centres across the United States and Europe. These experiences provided valuable additional training in complex spinal deformity care, as well as exposure to emerging technologies such as 3D navigation and robotic-assisted surgery.
Alongside my surgical practice, I have a particular interest and expertise in non-operative management of scoliosis. I have been actively involved in the BASIS (Bracing in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis) Study, serving as Principal Investigator in Oxford and subsequently as Sub-Investigator at the Evelina. This work has strengthened my commitment to evidence-based pathways that support the right treatment, at the right time, for every patient.
My approach to care is calm, collaborative and patient-focused. I believe that clear communication and shared decision-making are essential to achieving the best possible outcomes. Whether planning surgery or exploring non-operative options, my aim is always to ensure that patients and families feel informed, supported and confident throughout their journey.

Very good at listening and understanding. Great outcome from surgery.
We visited Mr Silk today and I can only echo previous comments he was clear/concise and put us at ease. My daughter was diagnosed with severe scoliosis in March and we were so concerned, having visited Mr Silk today he put us at ease. My daughter (15) felt really comfortable, and he explained absolutely everything. Having met Mr Silk today I feel really confident for her surgery and that’s a reflection on Mr Silk himself - Thankyou :)
Explained x ray and full Checked and explained movement
Very helpful visit gave an insight to progress over time, very professional and nice
Dr silk was absolutely brilliant. He made us feel at ease, talked us through my son’s spinal fusion surgery step by Step. He was professional, polite and was happy to answer any questions we had. I’m extremely grateful he was able to do this for my son, who now has amazing posture and his scar is very neat. I will always be eternally grateful to Dr silk. Kind regards
From the first time we met Mr Silk we as a family felt at ease everything with regards to my sons surgery was explained thoroughly which helped us as a family understand the severity of what our son was going to go through but also the benefits of what the surgery would have on his day to day life. My sons surgery was one of the most difficult spinal surgeries Mr Silk has ever perfumed and we couldn't be more thankful for everything he done for our son and the long 14 hours of surgery Mr Silk went through with him. Our sons recovery has been excellent, we had a small issue with pressure sores but this wasnt to do with his spine this was down to my son now being able to sit straight, however Mr Silk booked us in asap to have the sores assessed and got his team to contact all the relevant people with regards to wheelchair seating etc them sores are now gone. My sons spine is fully fussed and he is now out of discomfort and so much happier its had such a positive effect kn his overall health and his comfort as a full time wheelchair user. If we had to go back and pick a spinal surgery again we would choose Mr Silk a million times over. We as a family will be forever grateful.
Excellent communication skills, exceptional professionalism, great ability to put us at ease, kind, compassionate and happy to answer my extensive list of questions!
Mr silk is the nicest most caring and compassionate surgeon we could have ever wished or hoped for. He made my daughter feel safe and comfortable about the spinal surgery. He gives you as much time as you need and never makes you feel rushed when you’re in his company.
Zac is an outstanding spinal surgeon who I have known for many years. He is highly experienced and a very well respected colleague with excellent skills in the treatment of complex spinal cases both elective and traumatic. His bedside manner is fantastic and I have no hesitation in recommending him highly
