About Mr William Matthews

Mr William Matthews is a dual fellowship-trained Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon. His NHS practice is based at West Suffolk Hospital, and private care based at St Edmunds Hospital, Bury St Edmunds. His clinical practice covers a broad spectrum of elective and trauma-related hand and wrist surgery, with particular interests in nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytrens contracture, degenerative and inflammatory arthritis, and acute and complex trauma of the upper limb.

Mr Matthews graduated in Medicine with distinction in Clinical Sciences from King’s College London, having previously completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at The University of Manchester. He went on to complete higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics within the East of England Deanery.

Following completion of specialist training, he went on to undertake two highly regarded Hand Surgery fellowships: the BSSH Training Interface Group Fellowship at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and a Senior Clinical Fellowship at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. These roles provided advanced training in both orthopaedic and plastic reconstructive techniques for hand and wrist conditions.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Matthews has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented nationally and internationally on topics such as scaphoid fracture management and surgical outcomes in hand conditions. He is regularly involved in postgraduate education, teaching on cadaveric surgical courses and FRCS exam preparation programmes.

Mr Matthews is able to offer quick access to consultations, usually within 1-2 weeks, meaning that you can start treatment promptly.

I was very nervous, but Mr Matthews was so kind and reassuring. The op only took 15 mins or so and I was spoken to throughout the entire procedure, and told what was happening.

5* treatment received from Mr Matthews recently when I broke my wrist. Surgery was required. Everything was explained fully in a way I understood. I felt totally at ease and confident in his ability. This has been justified with excellent surgical outcome. Professional and polite at all times. If the need arose again would definitely be happy for Mr Matthews to operate again.

Mr Matthews was very pleasant when we met him in outpatients & when I had the operation for carpal tunnel syndrome. He explained all that he would be doing to relieve the pain in both of my wrists & hands. I’m very pleased with the progress & the outcome.
