Dr Vinnie Nambisan is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at HCA Healthcare UK, providing holistic care, including symptom management, to people with life-limiting illnesses and to patients receiving treatment for existing conditions. He qualified from Leeds University, also obtaining a BSc degree in Psychology in relation to Medicine. His passion for palliative medicine grew from observing the transformative effect of palliative care on the lives of those affected by life-limiting illnesses.
Vinnie has extensive experience in the field, having worked in NHS hospitals, hospices, community services, and independent healthcare facilities in London. He is unique in being employed by HCA Healthcare to lead their flagship palliative and supportive care service, and to provide care for inpatients and outpatients being treated at any of their facilities in London, where he works alongside HCA's oncology, haematology and medical teams.
Before joining HCA in 2020, Vinnie worked at The London Clinic, another leading independent hospital. Under his leadership, the London Clinic's end of life care was rated "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2017.
As well as providing care to patients approaching the end of life, Vinnie also sees patients at earlier stages of an illness, including patients undergoing treatment for cancer aimed at cure or long-term control.
Vinnie has held senior clinical governance roles and has a strong interest in medical ethics and law. He holds a Master's degree in medical ethics and law and has lectured widely on palliative care, medical ethics and law to various healthcare, insurer and regulatory audiences. Outside his clinical work, Vinnie works in the fitness to practise directorate of the doctors' regulator, the General Medical Council (GMC). He has also worked with the GMC on revising their end of life care guidance. Since January 2024, Vinnie has been a Trustee of the charity Compassion in Dying, who support people to make choices and achieve their wishes at the end of their lives.
Outside patient care, Vinnie is the medical advisor for Pal, a care companion app, where he is particularly involved in a project to develop an AI-assisted patient-reported symptom tool, and is the Medical Director for Livaware, a private independent nursing company providing holistic care palliative and supportive care for people at home.
