Dr Tristan Ramcharan is a highly skilled consultant paediatric and sport cardiologist who works in the world-renowned cardiac unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He specialises in treating heart problems in children, from newborns to young adults, and is highly skilled in advanced imaging techniques including trans-thoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. His practice is centred on a family-centric approach that prioritises understanding the needs of both children and their parents. Dr Ramcharan’s empathetic communication style and clear explanations make him an excellent choice for anyone seeking treatment for their child's heart condition. He is confident in managing a wide range of heart problems in children, including heart murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, fainting and POTS. He has a particular interest in exercise induced symptoms - including chest pain, dizziness, palpitations and fatigue.
As well as paediatrics, Dr Ramcharan is passionate about sport, exercise, and cardiac rehabilitation. He has an MSc in Sport Cardiology, graduating with Distinction from St George's University London in 2022. He can conduct cardiovascular screening to detect potential causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and those involved in competitive sports. As a recognised expert in paediatric sport cardiology, he has been appointed to the English Football Association’s sport cardiology expert panel.
During a consultation with Dr Ramcharan, he will undertake a detailed history and cardiovascular examination of your child, including checking their height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels. He may also perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and an ultrasound (echocardiogram) to assess the rhythm, electrical activity, structure, and function of the heart. These tests would incur an additional charge.
Furthermore, he is an active researcher with several international presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals, covering both congenital, acquired heart disease and sport cardiology. He was the author of one of the first articles to be published internationally on Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Associated with COVID (MIS-C/PIMS-TS). Most recently, Dr Ramcharan has been appointed as an honorary senior lecturer in Sport Cardiology and module lead for the MSc in Sport Cardiology at City St George's, University of London.
Dr Ramcharan is highly respected and loved by his patients, and is the patron of the "Young at Heart" charity, which supports families of children with heart conditions at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Dr Ramcharan has recently been recognised by Doctify with the 2024 "Outstanding Patient Experience" Badge, as a special recognition for being in the top 10% of clinicians, and as a symbol of his outstanding care as one of the best in his field. He has over 100 verified 5* reviews, with "clear communication", "dedication" and "reassuring" being consistent themes.
Dr Ramcharan looks after patients from around the UK, with patients regularly travelling several hours for a private consultation. Once you get in contact, Dr Ramcharan will explain the private process, how to make an appointment, what details are needed and for insured patients, what information you will need to get from your insurance to get pre-authorisation. All tests are done as an all-in-one consultation with results provided instantly, and if necessary a follow-up plan laid out.

Dr Ramcharan was absolutely lovely. He was incredibly friendly, approachable and easy to talk to, and had such a fantastic way with my daughter. He immediately made her feel comfortable and at ease throughout the appointment and explained everything clearly to me as well. He was thorough, reassuring and genuinely caring, and I came away feeling completely reassured. Such a lovely doctor with a brilliant approach to children. I honestly couldn’t recommend him highly enough.
We found out from our GP that our baby girl had a heart murmur, and as first-time parents, we understandably wanted reassurance and answers as quickly as possible. We contacted Dr Tristan on Monday, and he was able to see us by 11am on Wednesday. From the moment we met him, he was incredibly kind, reassuring and understanding of our anxiety. He carried out all the necessary tests and was able to give us the results within minutes, explaining everything clearly and patiently. We are incredibly grateful for the care and reassurance he gave us during what was a very worrying time. We genuinely couldn’t recommend Dr Tristan highly enough and would not hesitate to see him agai
We made this appointment for a second opinion and to understand the situation better. We came away feeling very assured and most importantly with clarity and a plan of how to move forward. We really appreciated Dr Tristan Ramcharan's approach.
Dr Ramcharan was excellent with my little one, fitted us into clinic really quickly and explained everything so well.
Dr Tristan was fantastic with us. Spent a long time going through the tests and what to expect before the appointment. On the day the clinic was lovely and welcoming. His bedside manner was so refreshing - the best kids doctor we have ever met in our lives! He communicated so well with our toddler and she was so happy at the end of it. He put our mind at ease and we are so grateful! Well worth the cost to have a single appointment with all tests done by him and all results explained there and then - amazing one-stop appointment
We researched several paediatric cardiologists before going with Dr Tristan based on his reviews, and travelled 3 hours just to see him. It was so worth it! His communication before the appointment, speaking to us via email and on the phone to ensure we knew what to expect, sending us videos to help us prepare our son for the ecg and ultrasound, and the actual appointment was so clear, and he was so good with our son. Highly recommend and well worth the cost!
Dr Ramcharan was superb. I cannot recommend him highly enough. We took our 5 year old son, who has high needs autism, to see him after he was found to have a heart murmur. Dr Ramcharan had a wonderful bedside manner. He was calm and patient with our son, engaged on his terms to show him all the medical equipment and make it not scary. Very clear explanations and reassurance. Absolutely superb.
Tristan was really helpful and arranged to see our son quickly after a CRY recommendation. The booking, appointment, advice and follow up have all been excellent. I would highly recommend him.
Friendly and professional. Took the time to connect with our son.
We took our 4 year old daughter to see Dr Ramcharan recently and we were very impressed. He is a lovely doctor with a wonderful bedside manner with children. Although we received some less than ideal news Dr Ramcharan communicated it in a gentle and reassuring way and explained the next steps. We feel in very good hands for whatever is to come.
Tristan is an excellent and approachable paediatric sports cardiologist.
