My current post is as Consultant Chemical Pathologist and General Physician at the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, Belfast, N Ireland for over 32 years. The Ulster Hospital is a teaching hospital of 650 beds with many Medical specialties represented in the Hospital.
Clinical responsibilities include both general medical, lipid, testosterone and erectile dysfunciton clinics and until recently diabetes clinics , inpatient care and taking part in the Consultant General Medical and laboratory Clinical Biochemitry on-call rota. I have General Medical clinics, an erectile dysfucntion, a testosterone deficiency clinic monthly and raised cholesterol clinic.
My research interests are in Metabolism with particular interests in diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, exercise biochemistry and andrology. I have been appointed Honorary Professor in the School of Sports Science, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences, University of Ulster. For my MD thesis I developed a method locally for measurement of absorption of an oral
glucose load using a dual isotope technique. This method has been used successfully
by others since that time. Several years ago I helped to set up the Ulster
Lipid Club, a grouping from all over the Province, to increase awareness among
the Medical Profession about the importance of Lipid disorders. This grouping
has enlarged to become the Irish Hyperlipidaemia Association.
I have been involved in teaching for many years and held the psot of ACB Regional Tutor in Clinical Biochemistry for Northern Ireland for 15 years with over 85 poapers published.
