About Dr Sharon Heng

Ms Sharon Heng is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with over 15 years of experience, specialising in medical retina diseases. She currently works at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where she is the Clinical Lead for both the Medical Retina Digital Clinics and the Northwest London Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme at Ealing. She also holds an honorary academic position as Clinical Lecturer at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London.

Ms Heng provides private consultations at several locations, including Moorfields Private (City Road, New Cavendish Street, and Bath Street) and The London Clinic. Her clinical expertise includes the management and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion, central serous retinopathy, cataracts, chalazion, and corneal abrasions. She performs cataract surgery, diabetic eye disease treatment, and refractive lens exchange.

Originally from Singapore, Ms Heng obtained her medical degree from the National University of Singapore. She moved to the UK to pursue a PhD in preventative therapy for AMD at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London, under the mentorship of Professors John Marshall and Sobha Sivaprasad. Her doctoral research on the use of nanosecond laser technology in early AMD continues to serve as a reference for retinal laser pathophysiology.

Ms Heng completed her clinical training through the Severn Deanery and Bristol Eye Hospital. She undertook advanced specialty training in uveitis and medical retina, followed by two clinical fellowships in the Vitreoretina Department at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She has since played a leading role in multiple international phase II and III clinical trials, including the OZLASE, TENAYA and RHINE studies.

In addition to her clinical and academic commitments, Ms Heng is passionate about medical education and service development. She supervises master’s students at UCL, co-edits the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Inspire teaching platform, and sits on the editorial board of Eye journal. She has also collaborated internationally on training programmes, including leading diabetic retinopathy screening and laser education initiatives in China.

Ms Heng is fluent in English and Mandarin and understands Cantonese and Hokkien. She is committed to addressing health inequalities and is the chief investigator of a study exploring access to digital eye care services. Her contribution to ophthalmology and the wider community has been recognised through numerous awards and international grants.
