Dr. Rehan Mustafa

I am an experienced respiratory consultant. I am the clinical director for respiratory medicine at the South Tees university Hospitals NHS trust. My research interests are lung cancer and pleural diseases. I have done extensive work with the primary care teams, and senior nursing staff, to establish care closer to home models for patients with chronic lung disease. The recent highlight was setting up a multidisciplinary and holistic (one-stop) service for our long COVID patients.

I have expertise in all sub specialities of respiratory medicine including:

• Chronic cough
• Unexplained breathlessness
• Asthma
• COPD
• Novel treatments for COPD/ lung emphysema - such as endobronchial lung volume reduction ( endobronchial valves etc.)
• Bronchiectasis
• Lung fibrosis
• Long COVID
• Lung cancer
• Occupational lung disease including asbestos related lung injury
• Sleep disordered breathing (in particular obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome)
• Novel treatment of lung cancer, including endobronchial tumour debulking with argon plasma coagulation, electrocautery, endobronnchial stenting, endobronchial ultrasound sampling for mediastinal ( intrathoracic) lymph node enlargement, medical thoracoscopy, indwelling pleural catheter for patients with long-term pleural effusions.
