About Dr Raj Chelliah
Dr Raj Chelliah is a dedicated Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital. With a broad spectrum of expertise, he welcomes patients presenting with various cardiovascular concerns, including chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, blackout, palpitations, heart failure, high blood pressure, and risk factor management.
Dr Chelliah completed his medical degree at the University of Dundee in 2002 and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. He later pursued cardiac research at the University of Edinburgh followed by his specialist cardiology training in Hull and East Yorkshire in 2009.
Dr Chelliah has particular interests in structural and complex coronary intervention. He completed a Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Fellowship at Kings’ College Hospital, London. In 2016, he was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Castle Hill Hospital, where he actively engages in high-volume coronary interventions, treating patients with heart attacks and stable coronary disease.
Choosing to become a consultant in Hull, Dr Chelliah saw the potential to contribute to the growth of a dynamic cardiac department and expand services. Beyond his clinical work, he has a keen interest in medical education and training, currently serving as the Training Programme Director for cardiology trainees within East Yorkshire.

Dr Chelliah felt like a safe pair of hands. He is very knowledgeable but more than that his manner is reassuring and professional. He took time to understand all the issues and explained clearly and patiently all the next steps. I would recommend him without reservation.
I first met Dr Chelliah in November 2019 when I was suffering from chest pains and a shortness of breadth, Dr Chelliah quickly diagnosed the issue with tests that I had a partial blockage of one of my coronary arteries. Right from my first meeting, Dr Chelliah filled me with confidence that this guy knows his stuff and proceeded with the operation with no issues whatsoever. More recently in January of this year I was referred to the Cardiologist again with the suspicion that I had similar issues so i asked for Dr Chelliah again if he was still at the Spire in Hull, i was really happy to find out he was. Same again, no messing, straight to the diagnosis with testing and was operated again in April 2024. I cannot be more happier that I operated on by someone of the quality and expertise the Dr Chelliah has shown me
