About Professor Madhavan Rajan

Madhavan Rajan is a clinical academic and ophthalmic surgeon based in Cambridge with expertise in management of corneal and cataract disorders. He is clinical lead of cataract and corneal service at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge and Visiting Professor to Vision and Eye Research Institute, School of Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

His clinical expertise includes cataract surgery, advanced intraocular lenses (toric and multifocal IOL's), corneal transplantation, femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery and Keratoconus management with corneal cross linking and intrastromal corneal rings.

Madhavan Rajan qualified in 1994 and underwent specialist ophthalmic training in London and has 20 years' experience in ophthalmology. His interest in cataract, cornea and refractive surgery led to a research fellowship at St Thomas' Hospital, London culminating in a MD degree at the University of London. Subsequently, he spent 2 years as corneal, refractive and external eye diseases fellow at Moorfield's Eye Hospital, London.He was appointed consultant ophthalmic surgeon in 2007. At the vision and eye research Institute (VERI), he leads corneal research with focused on corneal transplant techniques, corneal therapeutics and advanced intraocular lenses and has several publications in peer reviewed literature. Professor Rajan and his team had developed a novel endothelial keratoplasty technique termed Microthin DSAEK that won the NHS Health enterprise Innovation award and in 2016, introduced femtosecond laser assisted eye surgery to patients in Cambridgeshire. In 2018, he received the EUCORNEA best research paper award for leading the project titled ‘Cell therapy cure for corneal blindness'
