Professor Jonathan Moore is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and the Clinical Director of Cathedral Eye Clinic. He has specialist expertise in ocular surface reconstruction, laser refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and other intraocular procedures, with an impressive personal record of approximately 25,000 completed treatments.
Prof Moore completed his medical degree at Queens University Belfast in 1991 followed by his specialist ophthalmology training in the Department of Ophthalmology, Belfast. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 1996 and furthered his expertise with a fellowship at Flinders Hospital in South Australia. In 2002, he was awarded his PhD in Ophthalmology from Queens University Belfast. Prof Moore also spent a research fellowship year at Harvard Medical School, Boston, under the guidance of Professor Tony Adamis and Professor Dimitri Azar.
Since 2007, Prof Moore has held a consultant ophthalmology position at the Mater Hospital, Belfast Trust, where he established and led the anterior segment service. His contributions include pioneering technical procedures such as DSAEK, INTACs, crosslinking, and topography-guided laser treatments for irregular corneal astigmatism. He developed novel pterygium operative techniques, refined mechanisms for more accurate IOL power predictions post-corneal refractive treatments, and recently introduced the use of fingertip blood to manage chronic non-healing corneal ulcers.
In addition to his surgical endeavours, Prof Moore is actively involved in education. He played a key role in teaching, training, and co-running an online PGDip/MSc Cataract and Refractive Surgery course through the University of Ulster. He also created an online surgical training video platform, aiming to provide high-level teaching on cataract surgery globally, with a special emphasis on reaching individuals in third-world countries.
Prof Moore's commitment extends to evidence-based research for enhanced patient care. The Cathedral Eye Research Foundation, under his leadership, has sponsored numerous research activities, including Dr Victoria McGilligan’s secondment to Harvard Medical School, Boston. Actively engaged in research at the University of Ulster, he also contributes to the development of novel genetic tools addressing various corneal and ocular surface pathologies. Prof Moore holds the position of Visiting Professor at Tainjin Medical University Eye Hospital in Tianjin, China.
Alongside his clinical work, Prof Moore serves on various boards and panels, including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he sets examination papers and serves as a medical examiner. He remains an active reviewer for multiple international ophthalmic journals.
