Professor John Kelly is a Professor of Uro-Oncology at University College London (UCL). He also serves as the clinical lead for Urology and robotic surgery at University College Hospital (UCLH). His expertise is primarily focused on urological cancers, including prostate, bladder, and renal cancer, and he is at the forefront of advancing robotic surgery techniques using the da Vinci Si system.
Professor Kelly graduated from Queen's University of Belfast in 1988. Throughout his career, he has received awards such as the Professor Geoffrey D. Chisholm Prize, the Calvert Medal, the Ethicon Foundation Prize, and the British Urological Foundation Award. He completed his Fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, gaining valuable experience.
Within the realm of cancer research and clinical studies, Professor Kelly holds significant roles. He chairs the National Cancer Research Institute bladder clinical study group and serves as the chief investigator for several large national studies, contributing to advancements in urological care.
In his role as a consultant urological surgeon, Professor Kelly specialises in robotic surgery for bladder and prostate cancer. He takes the lead at the London Cancer Urology Surgery Centre and directs the robotic surgery program at UCLH. As the professor of uro-oncology at UCL, his research group is dedicated to exploring innovative therapies for bladder and prostate cancer, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.
Professor Kelly also serves as the Clinical Lead for urology at Westmoreland Street Hospital, one of Europe's largest urology departments. Here, he oversees state-of-the-art surgical procedures utilising cutting-edge technologies, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and leaders in the field.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Professor Kelly has held leadership positions in the UK National Cancer Research Institute, including chairing the Bladder Clinical Studies Group, and currently chairs the Scientific Committee of The Urology Foundation. He holds the Orchid chair of male genito-urinary oncology in collaboration with the Orchid Charity.
Professor Kelly's professional memberships include the Medical Protection Society, BAUS Oncology, the National Cancer Research Institute, and the National Translational Research Institute. His contributions to urological medicine and cancer research have earned him a reputation as a leader in the field.
