Professor Mark Wilkinson is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Sheffield and serves as an Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. With over three decades of experience as an orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Wilkinson is dedicated to providing high-quality care to patients dealing with joint-related issues, particularly in the knee and hip, including conditions like cartilage damage and arthritis.
He is recognised as a leading authority in pain management and treatment for knee and hip problems. Professor Wilkinson is among the select few worldwide who are members of the International Hip Society, an exclusive group comprising top experts in hip surgery. He plays a pivotal role as the orthopaedic surgeon specialist representative on the UK NICE Osteoarthritis guideline committee, contributing to the decision-making process regarding treatments for osteoarthritis in the UK.
Professor Wilkinson completed his medical degree at the University of Sheffield, where he also received his training. He then pursued a Ph.D. in the science of hip replacement at the University of Sheffield, successfully completing it in 2001. His specialist training in the management of hip and knee problems was undertaken in Sheffield and at Wrightington Hospital, where modern hip replacement surgery was pioneered. Additionally, he underwent specialised fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan.
In his role as the Chair of the Research Committee of the National Joint Registry and Chair of Trustees for the British Orthopaedic Research Society, Professor Wilkinson is at the forefront of orthopaedic research efforts. His research interests involve understanding how patient differences and choices impact their outcomes following joint replacement.
Professor Wilkinson has been involved in the publication of numerous book chapters and more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications on arthritis and its treatment. He is a sought-after speaker who has delivered invited lectures worldwide on subjects related to joint replacement and arthritis. He is also active in research focusing on the scientific understanding of the causes and development of arthritis, as well as the exploration of innovative treatments, including stem cell therapies.

He was professional, knowledgeable and was easy to talk to .
Prof Wilkinson was good but once the form for an MRI was handed to Imaging things went pear shaped! I had to chase the form up (MRI is a different department) and couldn't get a scan for 2 weeks. Prof Wilkinson is then off on annual leave so won't be able to review the scan until June - 2 months after the consultation!
