About Professor Carl Philpott

Professor Carl Philpott is an academic surgeon, specialising in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery. He graduated from Leicester University Medical School and completed his training in University Hospitals of Leicester. He then went on to undertake research in developing special apparatus' for testing the sense of smell. He also completed further training in East Anglia and spent a year at the St Paul's Sinus Centre in Vancouver, Canada, where he learnt and developed his skills in endoscopic sinus surgery. This mainly involved inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses and removal of tumours from the sinuses and anterior skull base. His main interests within ENT include chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and other sino-nasal disorders. He has set up an ENT image-guided sinus surgery facility in East Anglia and also runs a sinus surgery course at UEA/Cambridge.

Professor Philpott has been working at the University of East Anglia since 2010. He is also a professor of Rhinology and Olfactology at UEA and leads on several research projects, including the MACRO Programme: Defining best management for adults with chronic sinusitis. He is also the ENT Lead for the Eastern Local Clinical Research Network, Chair of the British Rhinological Society Research Group, President of the British Otorhinolaryngology & Allied Sciences Research Society and Associate Editor of Clinical Otolaryngology.

Furthermore, he has worked at the Dresden University Smell & Taste Clinic, where he has learnt different techniques in analysing the sense of smell. This has promoted his status to Director of the first British Smell & Taste Clinic. Following on from this, he has researched olfactory disorders and is working on a treatment for patients with a reduced sense of smell. Professor Philpott also supports the charity ‘Fifth Sense' as Director of Research and Medical Affairs; the charity now has over 3000 members in the UK.
